This uptick suggests some recovery after the Indian market closed lower for the third straight session on Thursday amid weak global cues and selling across key sectors.

GIFT Nifty in green after domestic weakness

Despite Thursday’s mild decline in the Sensex and Nifty, the GIFT Nifty is signaling a potential rebound. The BSE Sensex had closed 82.79 points, or 0.10% lower, at 81,361.87, while the NSE Nifty slipped 18.8 points, or 0.08%, to settle at 24,793.25.

Broader market still fragile

The pain was sharper in broader markets, with Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices falling for the third straight day. Sentiment remains weak as investors continue to book profits after recent highs.

Realty and PSU Bank remain under pressure

Nifty PSU Bank was the top sectoral loser on Thursday, down 2 per cent, dragged by Central Bank and Bank of India. Nifty Realty also extended losses for the third day, with Godrej Properties and Brigade Enterprises leading the decline. All constituents of both indices ended in the red—a trend that could weigh on early trade.

IT, Pharma, and FMCG sectors in downtrend

The Nifty IT index declined for the second straight session, led by Oracle Financial Services and Coforge. Pharma, Metal, and FMCG indices also continued their downward trend, each logging a third consecutive day of losses. However, some bargain-buying in beaten-down counters may emerge today.

Banking under pressure; Auto shines

Nifty Bank ended below the key 55,600 mark, signaling weakness in financials. On the flip side, Nifty Auto was the only sector to close in the green, helped by gains in Eicher Motors and M&M—stocks that could remain in focus.

Global cues: Mixed signals from US and crude

US markets were closed on Thursday for the Juneteenth holiday, but futures trading was soft—Dow Jones Futures down 117 points and Nasdaq Futures off by 0.3%. Meanwhile, Brent crude edged up to $77.4/bbl, and gold rose to $3,384/oz, pointing to heightened risk aversion.

Geopolitical concerns remain elevated, with reports suggesting Donald Trump may decide on a potential strike on Iran within two weeks. Iran’s foreign minister is expected to meet global leaders in Geneva today, keeping global markets on alert.
